Let's Make a Difference the Week Before Thanksgiving
Let's put our faith into action and join together for a one-day S.O.S. mission trip on Saturday, November 19.
Berry United Methodist Church, 4754 N. Leavitt, in Chicago's Lincoln Square community is a struggling urban church, which, like many, has been in years of decline yet seeks to be faithful. They stretch to fund a full-time clergy person, pay their apportionments, partner with African Community Church and mission serving organizations like the Night Ministry, Refugee One, LOOM (Catholic Charities), LaLeche League, 12-step programs, and starving community theater groups. They've kept the building heated and the lights on. The truth is, however, that they have done this while needing to neglect some much needed maintenance and repairs.
Lincoln Square is a vibrant diverse neighborhood, but when new folks visit, they see peeling paint, cracked walls, shabby carpet, missing tile. Too often they "check out" before they discover the work and witness of the congregation!
The DGFUMC Board of Trustees and Missions, Justice and Community Work Area are hoping to make a difference at Berry UMC by patching and painting a few walls, replacing some old towel and soap dispensers, do some minor carpentry work and spreading some mulch if the weather cooperates.
Everyone is invited to participate. Bring your family and friends or come by yourself. We will meet at church at 8:00 a.m. and carpool to Chicago. We will plan on returning by 4:00 p.m. in plenty of time for the Hanging of the Greens Handbell concert.
